Workers block Pok Fu Lam Road in labour dispute

A group of construction workers staged a protest outside Queen Mary Hospital and blocked a section of Pok Fu Lam Road on Tuesday morning in a labour dispute.

Pictures and videos circulated on social media showed workers placing traffic cones on the road.

The demonstration led to congestion in the area. The Transport Department said all lanes of Pok Fu Lam Road near Queen Mary Hospital were closed to traffic at one point because of an “emergency incident”.

The police said they received reports of blocked roads at around 8:45am, and the workers dispersed an hour later.

Officers said about 30 people took part in the protest.

Police said the labour dispute involved about 100 workers of a sub-contractor of a redevelopment project at Queen Mary Hospital.

A Queen Mary Hospital spokesman said it understood the project’s main contractor was in the process of terminating its contract with the sub-contractor.

According to the spokesman, Labour Department officials said the case didn’t have to do with wages owed, and the protesting workers have agreed to hold talks with the sub-contractor and the main contractor to try to resolve the dispute.
