Tong Ying-kit appeals against conviction, sentence

The first person convicted of national security offences in Hong Kong, Tong Ying-kit, has filed an appeal against the verdict and sentence.

Three national security judges last month found him guilty of terrorism and inciting secession for driving a motorbike into a group of police officers while carrying a “Liberate Hong Kong” protest flag on July 1, 2020, and sentenced him to nine years in jail.

The judges ruled that the liberate slogan is capable of inciting others to commit secession.

The 24-year-old former waiter was also disqualified from driving for 10 years.
