RTHK to play bigger role in fight against pandemic

The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Edward Yau, said on Monday that RTHK is taking on a larger role in the fight against the pandemic.

Yau told a Legco panel meeting that the public broadcaster has already stepped up its coverage in mandatory testing and lockdown, as well as promotion and education work, in the past two weeks.

The minister, whose bureau oversees RTHK, said the station should fulfil its role a public service broadcaster and take on additional responsibilities in the fight against Covid-19.

The Director of Broadcasting, Patrick Li, for his part, said RTHK will continue to look into opportunities to show international sporting events, including events for athletes with disabilities.

Li said promoting sport and social integration is part of the public broadcaster’s duties.

He cited coverage of last year’s Tokyo Olympic Games and Paralympics, as well as the ongoing Beijing Winter Olympics and the upcoming Winter Paralympics.
