Police investigate anthem booing at mall

Police have told RTHK that they’ve launched an investigation into the booing of the national anthem during an Olympic broadcast at a Kwun Tong shopping mall.

Large numbers of fans gathered at the APM Mall in Kwun Tong on Monday night to see fencer Cheung Ka-long defeat defending champion Daniele Garozzo of Italy, 15-11, in the men’s foil family.

The crowd stayed on to watch the medal ceremony, at which the national anthem was played. Footage circulated online from the scene showed booing from some sections of the mall.

RTHK understands that Kowloon East police have requested CCTV footage from the mall to support their investigation.

The mall is one of several showing major events from the Tokyo Games.
