Chief Inspector Lee Ying-chi told a news conference that at about 4pm, the man pushed the woman from the platform of Tai Hing North station onto the track, which was clear of trains at the time.
Lee said the suspect fled, and the woman suffered abrasions to her arms and neck.
The MTR Corporation said the suspect was spotted on CCTV boarding a train at Ping Shan Station at 7pm heading towards Tuen Mun Ferry Pier.
MTR staff told the police, who detained him at Ching Chung station.
The police said initial investigation showed that the suspect and the pair do not know each other, and they’re looking into the suspect’s mental health.
