Police on Tuesday said they have arrested a man accused of molesting a 12-year-old girl left home alone while a partner allegedly helped burgle her public housing flat on April 1.

Officers said the duo had first tried to get into her Sau Mau Ping apartment by pretending to hand out free face masks, but then threatened to have authorities take away a dog inside the flat when she refused to let them enter.

When the girl opened the door, police say the 47-year-old man proceeded to sexually molest the victim while a female suspect, 38, was said to have searched the flat to look for valuables.

Police also say the alleged incident was recorded on the suspect’s phone.

Officers say the duo eventually left with some HK$5,600 worth of property, including HK$1,300 in cash, a mobile phone and a necklace.

The girl was said to have made her own way to the police station after they left.

Officers say a social worker has been assigned to follow up on the case.
