HK adds 8,674 new coronavirus cases and 43 deaths

Hong Kong on Wednesday reported a record 8,674 new coronavirus cases and 43 deaths.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said all but three cases were local infections.

For the day, it was notified of a total of 7,990 cases from all sources, which includes both confirmed, and preliminary positive cases.

The Hospital Authority said 24 Covid patients passed away in the past day. Most of them are elderly people.

It said 19 patients died on Sunday and Monday but there was a delay in reporting the cases.

To address medical needs of Covid patients, the authority said it would open two new designated clinics, in Yau Ma Tei and Cheung Sha Wan.

Meanwhile, Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the CHP said officials analysed some death cases recorded in the current Omicron outbreak.

She said the death rate among unvaccinated patients was 0.54 per cent – 18 times those who have been jabbed.

Chuang again appealed to people to get vaccinated against the virus.

The centre’s controller, Dr Edwin Tsui, called on people confirmed with Covid-19 to fill in an electronic form which would help the authorities arrange quarantine facilities distribute anti-epidemic supplies.
