Green groups call for roadmap on carbon neutrality

Twenty green groups have jointly called on the government to include a comprehensive roadmap for Hong Kong achieving carbon neutrality in its next Climate Action Plan.

In her policy address last year, Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced a goal for Hong Kong to be carbon neutral by 2050.

But Greenpeace campaigner Ng Hon-lam said on Tuesday that it remains to be seen how the government hopes to achieve this.

“They promised to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050. However, we cannot see a timeline or how are they doing it. We don’t know that yet,” Ng said.

“Many people think that climate change is far away from Hong Kong but it’s not. It’s September but we are still setting heat records. Typhoons will be stronger and will happen in Hong Kong more frequently too.”
