Five cross-border truck drivers down with Covid

Authorities in Shenzhen said on Tuesday that five cross-border truck drivers have tested positive for Covid-19 since Friday last week.

The city’s port office said two of them tested positive at the Shenzhen Bay checkpoint as they left Hong Kong, and three were confirmed after they returned from Shenzhen to the SAR.

It said the drivers’ close contacts have been sent into quarantine, and the places they’ve been to had been disinfected.

“To build a strong line of defence against the epidemic to protect public health and safety, the Port Office of the Shenzhen People’s Government reminds cross-border truck drivers to protect themselves by strictly following the mainland’s anti-epidemic measures,” the office said in a brief statement.

Some businesses had said recently that the surge of cases had affected the import of goods such as fresh vegetables, causing an increase in prices.

In a statement, the SAR government said the amount of vegetables arriving at its wholesale food markets on Monday night accounted for just a third of what they received the day before.

But a spokesperson said some trucks had arrived on Tuesday morning and brought more goods.

Officials added that they believe supply will bounce back shortly, with more cross-border trucks heading north to bring back supplies.
