CPPCC members urged to back improved electoral system

The annual session of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference opened in Beijing on Friday, with chairman Wang Yang encouraging the members from Hong Kong to support the SAR’s improved electoral system.

In his work report, Wang also said the advisory body will support SAR members in promoting and implementing the principle of “patriots administering Hong Kong”.

Delegates were also asked to make proposals on patriotic education for young people in Hong Kong and Macau, ways to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, and how they can strengthen unity and friendship between all compatriots.

The session is being held alongside the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress, which opens on Saturday.

Wang emphasised that the past year was the centenary of the Chinese Communist Party which marked a historic milestone for both the party and the country.

He also said Beijing wants to improve the effectiveness of consultation and raise work performance.

He added that more than 5,000 proposals for new legislation or regulation have been submitted by delegates since the previous annual session.

President Xi Jinping attended the opening meeting at the Great Hall of the People, as did other state leaders including Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office director Xia Baolong and former Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung.
