Hong Kong logs over 34,000 new Covid cases

The number of new coronavirus cases in Hong Kong hit another record high on Monday at 34,466, as the Omicron-driven Covid wave showed no sign of abating.

Authorities reported 124 Covid-related deaths.

The Hospital Authority (HA) said 87 Covid patients died over the past day. It added that there had been 37 deaths between February 19 and 25, but these had not been reported until now.

More than 600 Covid patients have so far died in the latest outbreak.

Dr Albert Au of the Centre for Health Protection said the upward trend of infections is worrying as the number of cases is still doubling every two to three days.

He said some 190,000 people have now been confirmed with Covid-19 in this latest outbreak.

Meanwhile, the HA said it would open five more designated clinics to treat Covid patients, taking the total to 14.
